A misstep, a hard-hitting hockey ball, or a fall: there are many ways to damage the cartilage of the knee. It is an unpleasant injury because cartilage acts as a shock absorber and a sliding layer that allows the bones to move alongside each other.
Every year, millions of people in Europe and the United States receive the diagnosis of 'traumatic focal defect' in the knee cartilage. This local damage causes pain and inflammation, and cartilage has poor self-healing capabilities. Startup Hy2Care®, based at the Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen, aims to change this. The company has developed a hydrogel implant that supports damaged cartilage to self-heal. "And particularly to heal neatly," emphasizes chemical engineer and CEO Leo Smit, "so that the patient does not experience recurring issues."
